Cloud Nine - The New Synthetic Drug and What You Need To Know

Do you have a teenager who goes to school in the Metro Detroit area?

Have you seen a product for sale called Cloud Nine?

It was almost two years ago when K2 became illegal almost overnight in the state of Michigan. In June of 2012, cities and counties all across Michigan started banning the selling and use of a product called K2.

In an article I wrote that June called K2 Made Illegal in Michigan, we saw that the drug was being sold at gas stations and was also known under names like “Spice” and “Bath Salts”.

In May alone of that year, there were 185 hospitalizations due to the use of K2. Vomiting, agitation, paranoia, and loss of physical control were only some of the side effects.

This Time – Cloud Nine

It seems to be happening again in Metro Detroit. Wayne Country has again issued out an imminent danger order for another synthetic drug now being called Cloud Nine.

Here is the order obtained by MLive.com

“All persons in the Wayne County Health Department jurisdiction that includes the 42 Wayne County communities outside of Detroit are immediately ordered to cease selling, trading, giving, bartering, serving, providing or otherwise making available such substances.”

Why is This Synthetic Drug Being Banned?

Like K2 and Spice, Cloud Nine is simply another name for bath salts.

According to Drugs.com, bath salts are “central nervous system stimulants that inhibit the norepinephrine-dopamine reuptake system and can lead to serious, and even fatal adverse reactions.”

Here are the listed side effects that have been collected by Drugs.com from what the emergency departments have reported:

  • Tachycardia (fast heart rate)
  • Hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Hyperthermia (elevated body temperature)
  • Seizures (convulsions)
  • Death has been reported
  • Altered mental status may present as severe panic attacks
  • Agitation
  • Paranoia
  • Delusions
  • Hallucinations
  • Violent behavior (including self-mutilation, suicide attempts and homicidal activity.)

Cloud Nine in Michigan

It seems like K2, Spice, and Cloud Nine have the most direct affect on our young people. Click on Detroit has reported that 5 teenagers have already overdosed on Cloud Nine.

George Rouhib, the Fraser Public Safety Director, told Click on Detroit that Cloud Nine “has the same affects as cocaine, meth, and ecstasy,” and “a person can basically have a heart attack”.

Cloud Nine is sold in an eye drop container and some even have labels that say “Not for human consumption”. It is most often used by putting drops on the tongue, mixing the drops with candy gum, soft drinks or sports drinks.

It can also be used in an e-cigarette or, according to another article by Mlive.com, the drug can be smoked through hookah pipes.

Schools including John Glenn High School in Westland and Salem High School in Canton have both had students sent to the hospital after ingesting the drug.

What You Need To Know About Cloud Nine

It seems that we have another K2 situation on our hands and if that is true there is some more information you need to know.

  • Bath Salts like Cloud Nine under any name can be harmful to you. Just take a look above at the listed potential side effects.
  • Teenagers are being offered this drug at schools. Make sure your teen knows the risks of using this drug. MLive.com has reported that Wayne County officials are already planning to “perform random inspections” all across the county in hopes of controlling the sales.

Summary

Two summers ago, Michigan moved fast to make the selling and distribution of the synthetic drug K2 illegal. That’s likely to happen again. If you are facing charges involving Cloud Nine, please give our office a call. I am here to help.
