Michigan’s House Panel has moved to criminalize the use of K2 and counties across Southeast Michigan have recently banned the selling of K2, a synthetic form of marijuana also known as Spice or Bath Salts. The substance has been banned under “imminent danger orders”.
K2 is a synthetic hallucinogenic substance that mimics the effects of cannabis. Prior to yesterday, K2 was sold in gas stations all across Michigan. The drug has been often labeled as incense or potpourri.
Risks of K2
So why fuss? According to The Detroit News article, Pressure Mounts on K2 Sellers, the abuse of K2, Spice or Bath Salts has lead to 91 teenagers out of 183 people hospitalized this year due to the devastating effects of the affordable designer drug.
Stories Behind the “Imminent Danger Order”
Alarming stories from victims throughout Southeastern Michigan were reported in the article:
“In one case, a grandmother is accused of shooting her teenage grandson, who she claimed was taking the substance. In a second case, the son of a Dearborn school administrator is accused of smoking K2 and then attacking his family and killing his father. And in West Bloomfield Township, a man was found dead on a private beach after reportedly ingesting the drug.”
In Detroit, anyone distributing K2 could face being charged with a misdemeanor with a fine or $200 or six months in prison or in some cases both. Detroit Mayor David Bing stated:
“To anyone distributing K2 or other synthetic marijuana in the City of Detroit to the detriment of our citizens, we have a message for you: We will seize it and we will prosecute you to the fullest extent of the law.”
Are you or is anyone you know facing charges involving K2, Spice or Bath Salts? Do not allow yourself or someone you know to go defenseless. Prior to this week one could purchase K2 at any gas station without consequence. This is now a serious offense. Having an attorney whose area of expertise is in drug crimes will allow you not to go defenseless.
