“More than 90 percent of youths arrested for sex offenses will not do it again.”
– According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, reported by The Detroit News.
A man who was convicted of sexually assaulting a woman when he was 14 years old is now facing trial for over 20 counts including first and second degree criminal sexual conduct.
Untested rape kits are now being tested and the number of rapes in Detroit is decreasing and serial rapists are being prosecuted.
Untested Rape Kits Now Being Tested
It was 2009 when a shocking discovery was made. In an abandoned Detroit police storage unit, over 10,000 untested rape kits were found. Kym Worthy, a Wayne County Prosecutor has been working hard to raise money to test these kits and prosecute the individuals involved.
In my article, Fund Raiser Aims to Solve 10,000 Untested Rape Kits in Detroit, I revealed at that time only 2,000 kits had been tested. Out of those 2,000 kits, a DNA match was found for 670. Out of those 670, 180 were serial rapists. Fifteen of those serial rapists had already been convicted.
Alleged Serial Rapist
The Detroit News reported that Michael Sykes was only 14 years old in 2008 when he sexually assaulted a woman in Highland Park. He was convicted of that crime and then served time at the Wayne County Juvenile Detention Facility.
According to the statistic provided by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, Michael Sykes is in the 10 percent of youths arrested for sex offenses to allegedly do it again.
Police are saying that once he was released, he allegedly raped three more women. Kym Worthy has charged Sykes with kidnapping, beating, raping, and robbing the three women. He is also being charged with rape of two other women from back in 2008.
Sykes is being charged with three counts of kidnapping, nine counts of first degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, two counts of armed robbery, three counts of felonious assault and felony firearm.
The Truth About Criminal Sexual Conduct
First degree criminal sexual conduct carries a sentence that could mean life in prison. Second degree has a maximum of 15 years in prison.
First degree criminal sexual conduct must have sexual penetration and 8 other possible circumstances including weapons being involved like in Sykes case.
Second degree involves sexual contact. This is defined by for the purpose of sexual arousal or gratification, intentional touching of intimate parts or the clothing covering intimate parts.
If you would like more detail about the difference between first-degree criminal sexual conduct and second degree, please see the article, The Truth About Criminal Sexual Conduct, for a break down both degrees in detail
Number of Rapes on the Decline in Detroit
The Detroit News reported that there has been a 33 percent decline in the amount of rapes in Detroit year to date. In 2014 around this time, there were 179 rapes in Detroit compared to 120 so far this year.
The decline is being attributed to the processing of the over 10,000 untested rape kits discussed in the beginning of the article. Worthy is now seeking funding to help with the prosecution of the suspected rapist.
What will these untested rape kits tell us? How many more serial rapists are on the streets of Detroit because of these 10,000 untested kits? The story of the accused serial rapist, Michael Sykes, is only one.
As Detroit looks to make its comeback, how much do you think these untested kits will have in making the streets of Detroit safer?
