Does being in the spot light put a target on your back?
Do you believe that celebrities should be held to a different standard when it comes to sexual assault?
Today, we are examining the cases of three different celebrities that have been accused of sexual assault. Now, not all of the celebrities have been convicted, but some have even spent years in prison because of these accusations. Remember as you read over these stories, please think innocent until proven guilty.
Britney Spears, American recording artist and entertainer, is one of those stars that everyone has heard about. Much of her life has been made public. In 2010, her personal life was in the headlines again when her bodyguard, Fernando Flores, accused her of sexual harassment.
The sexual assault allegations included Spears walking around her in the nude, yelling at him and making sexual advances towards him. After an almost two year legal battle, Spears reportedly settled the case for a “modest” financial settlement to put the ordeal behind her, according to TMZ.
Mike Tyson II is an American professional boxer and former undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. He may also be most known for being disqualified during a fight after biting a chunk of Evanders Holyfield’s ears off in a professional boxing match in June 1997.
Tyson was arrested and accused of raping 18-year-old, Desiree Washington, the Miss Black Rhode Island, in an Indianapolis hotel room in 1991. He was convicted to 10 years and ended up spending 3 years in prison. According to Rollingout.com Tyson’s convictions continues to torment him,
“Mike Tyson’s past continues to haunt him. He will appear on an episode of “Law & Order: SVU,” but change.org has decided to boycott his guest role because of his rape conviction in 1991.”
Ben Roethlisberger is a two-time Super Bowl winner and quarterback for the Pittsburg Steelers. Although he may be one of the older quarterbacks in the NFL, he can still hold his own in any game. In 2008, he was accused of rape by a Lake Tahoe casino host. As reported in the USA Today, in December 2011,”all of the parties in the suit signed stipulations to dismiss the case.”
At a small college in Georgia in 2010, Roethlisberger was accused for the second time of sexual assault by a 20 year old college student. He was suspended by the NFL, however, charges were never brought against him. According to ESPN, the league stated that Roethlisberger was suspended for six games for “violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy.”
