On Monday, a dazed, drooping eye man stepped into the courtroom almost unnoticed, except by the families of the victims. With his hair dyed a comic book orange, 24-year-old James Holmes sat motionless with his eyes at times closing while the Judge spoke.
James Holmes is the man being charged with the tragic shooting that happened in a Colorado theater last week. The question is why.
The Detroit News reports:
“Police say Holmes, clad in body armor and armed with an assault rifle, a shotgun and handguns opened fire at the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises,” killing 12 people and wounding 58 others.”
According to The Detroit News, Mr. Holmes is refusing to cooperate, making it still unknown why he opened fired at the premiere of “The Dark Night Rises”. Right now, Mr. Holmes is being held on suspicion of first-degree murder and does not expect to be formally charged until next Monday. Mr. Holmes may also face counts of weapons violations and aggravated assault.
When police officers searched Mr. Holmes apartment, there were forces to evaluate the building as well as the surrounding buildings due to the “booby traps” that had been set up in the apartment. Police found explosive devices, unknown liquids, trip wires and a batman mask.
Mr. Holmes had been enrolled at The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, however, in June, Mr. Holmes quit the Ph. D. program. The reason for Mr. Holmes quitting is unknown. There are speculations that surround a recent oral exam. Mr. Holmes family pastor spoke out saying that he remembered a shy boy,
“He wasn’t an extrovert at all. If there was any conversation, it would be because I initiated it, not because he did,” said Jerald Borgie, senior pastor of Penasquitos Lutheran Church. “He had some goals. He wanted to succeed, he wanted to go out, and he wanted to be the best,” Borgie said. “He took pride in his academic abilities. A good student. He didn’t brag about it.”
Why, is probably the biggest question on everyone’s mind and from the current looks of it, we may not know for awhile. Let us say that here at David J. Kramer Law Firm PLLC, our thoughts and prayers are with the families in this tragic time.
