Detroit Woman Killed After Off-Duty Officer’s Gun Discharges

When Yolanda McNair said good-bye to her daughter Saturday evening, she had no idea that it would be the last.

Adaisha Miller would have been celebrating her 25th birthday today. McNair said instead of celebrating her daughter’s birthday they are now planning her funeral. Miller was killed Saturday after hugging an off-duty cop.

What Happened

To the family’s dismay, they have been told a few different stories. They have heard everything from their daughter flirting with the off-duty officer to hugging the officer from behind while he was dancing with his wife. It is even unclear whether Miller hugged the officer from behind, face to face or simply tugged on his waist. The officer’s lawyer said that his client did not even know the woman.

What we do know:

  • The police officer was hosting a party that Miller attended
  • The officer was carrying a loaded weapon
  • The officer and Miller embraced.
  • The gun discharged and killed Miller

“A Tragic Incident”

The police are calling this “a tragic incident”. They have yet to release the name of the officer. The officer has been placed on administrative leave while a full departmental investigation is carried out by internal affairs. The Detroit Free Press reported:

“Police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said officers have the option of carrying a gun off-duty but there is no requirement for them to be armed.”
A separate investigation is being conducted by the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, which is typical approach when there is a shooting involving an officer. The weapon was a 40-caliber Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol, which is department issued.

A birthday celebration has been replaced by funeral. A party has gone wrong. A tragic accident leaves two families devastated. Fox News, Yolanda McNair, quoted McNair as stating:

“For this to happen to her, whether they want to call it freak accident or mistake in judgment, it should have never happened to my child, and there’s nothing I can do to get her back,” McNair told WDIV-TV.”
