Top Michigan Restaurants – Part 2

  1. Woodpile BBQ Shack
    303 S. Main St.
    Clawson, MI 48017
    Phone: 248-565-8149
    www.woodpilebbqshack.com

I found this gem because they hosted a Kuhnhenn Brothers Beer Dinner in May. I was astounded at the moistness of the beef brisket. Their cheddar jalapeno sausage reminded me of the ones I had at Kreutz Market in Texas, snappy and juicy. Finally, their St. Louis ribs were a true treat. Pitmasters Steve “Bubba” Coddington and Perry Hiltz have got the BBQ racket down cold…er I mean hot! This is one of the three finest BBQ restaurants in the State of Michigan, and arguably, the finest.

  2. La Casita Taqueria
    49080 Pontiac Trail
    Wixom, MI 48393
    Phone: 248-926-1980
    www.lacasitataqueria.com

This little restaurant located in a strip mall in Wixom offers up big fare when it comes to authentic Mexican food. Their burritos and nachos and specialty dishes don’t disappoint, but what I come here for predominantly are the tacos. You can get then filled with 10 different meats, including Tinga (spicy shredded chicken), Al Pastor (spicy shredded pork) and steak. I get mine on a soft flour tortilla with tomatoes, sour cream, shredded Mexican cheese and salsa. Their salsa is as good as it gets in my home state of Michigan. People come from all over for La Casita’s food. Inspiring!

  3. Moro’s Dining
    6535 Allen Rd
    Allen Park, MI 48101
    Phone: 313-382-7152
    www.morosdining.com

Moro’s is a truly outstanding restaurant which I always frequent when I’m in the Downriver area. They make the best shrimp scampi known to man and on occasion they make a dumpling soup that reminds me of the kind my dear mom made when I was a kid, made straight from scratch. Their Shrimp Bordelaise and Chateaubriand, both served for two or more are exquisite. Their pasta is also homemade and very delightful. This place is worth a trip downriver just so you can try their fine restaurant.

  4. Supino’s Pizzeria
    2457 Russell Ave.
    Detroit, MI 48207
    Phone: 313 567-7879
    www.supinopizzeria.com

Detroit’s only authentic NY style thin crust pizza doesn’t disappoint. Located in Eastern Market this hot spot offers creative toppings on their pizza such as egg, parmesan cheese and prosciutto. Try the El Greco featuring spinach, feta, onions, mozzarella, and kalamata olives. A classic!

  5. Polish Village Café
    2990 Yemans
    Hamtramck, MI 48212
    Polishvillagecafe.us

This is the best Polish food you’ll find in the Midwest, or as they advertise, the “Finest Food West of Warsaw.” The kielbasa is truly memorable and their potato pancakes are legendary as are their pierogis. Try their dill pickle soup or their chicken livers for an exotic encounter. Truly outstanding fare!

  6. The Silver Spoon Ristorante
    6830 North Rochester Road
    Rochester, MI 48306
    Phone: 248-652-4500
    www.silverspoonristorante.com

This is true Italian gourmet to the fullest. There are so many bland or generic Italian joints that don’t separate themselves from the pack. The Silver Spoon does! Try the Fettuccine al Ragù di Coniglio, farm-raised braised rabbit with white wine sauce or the Grigliata Mista di Pesce, which is grilled swordfish, wild Atlantic salmon, jumbo shrimp, sea scallop and calamari. The pasta is handmade every day and fresh as it gets. A truly classic Italian restaurant of epic proportions!

  7. Ajishin
    42270 Grand River Ave
    Novi, MI 48375
    Phone: 248-380-9850
    Facebook Page

This is the best sushi restaurant and Udon noodles restaurant in the state, period. Their spicy tuna roll is a work of art as it’s whipped with a spicy sauce and tuna. They also have Toro on occasion and all of their food is as fresh as it gets. Every time I walk in this place it’s filled with Asian patrons which tells you how popular it is. So grateful to have a place like this in my hometown.

  8. Taco Especial
    278 Southfield Rd
    Ecorse, MI
    Phone: 313-382-5990
    tacoespecial1979.com

My brother Jamey Kramer (the realtor) found this little gem while he was in the downriver area. While the atmosphere is modest the food is not. The owner and cook hail from Mexico and they make truly Mexican cuisine. Try the Mexican sandwich, an open faced layered flour tortilla sandwich. They start with a flour tortilla, layered with white beans, another tortilla, then a layer of Mexican rice, and finally a third tortilla that they then finish off with either their Guisado de Res or Guisado de Puerco topped with melted cheese. Another special is the Enchilada Grande, an extra-large flour tortilla dipped in their secret red sauce filled with shredded chicken or ground beef and Spanish onions. They then roll it up and steam it with cheese melted on top. This enchilada is a meal in itself.

  9. Gonella’s Original Deli
    22069 Outer Dr
    Dearborn, MI 48124
    Phone: 313-563-8500
    www.gonellas.com

My friend Chris from Oakpointe Church turned me on to this place. Situated on the busy road known as Outer Drive, this place serves one of the best Italian subs I’ve ever had, if not the best. Their Italian sauce is made from scratch and is pure bliss. Their Italian subs are created using a variety of Italian meats (Hard Salami, Salami Cotto, Capicola, Mortadella, Smoked Ham), provolone cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and Gonella’s homemade dressing, served on a soft or hard roll. They offer other cheeses and meats, such as turkey and corned beef as well.

  10. Hippos Hot Dogs
    1648 Rochester Rd
    Phone: 248-524-9778
    Troy, MI 48083
    hipposhotdogs.com

This place was left off of my first list by accident as I’ve been coming here for years. They serve bona-fide Chicago style hot dogs and they also have the best chili around. Each day they have a special, which can either be an Italian beef sandwich, a Cajun sausage, a polish sausage with grilled onions and peppers and other special items as well. This is a family owned business and they provide down-home service. Any time I’m in the Troy or Royal Oak area I sneak over to Hippos for a great meal.
