Detroit Prepares for 2013 Angels’ Night

Are you volunteering this year on Angels’ Night?

Do you know what time the curfew for minors in Detroit is?

Tomorrow is Halloween and tonight is Angels’ Night. Before it was called Angels’ Night, it was commonly referred to as Devils’ Night. Back in 1984, Detroit had over 800 fires on Devils’ Night and the city of Detroit decided to fight back by creating a program called Angels’ Night. Every year volunteers take to the streets to patrol the city and working to prevent fires.

Angels’ Night Patrol Making A Difference

This year you will see police, firefighters, the Detroit Mayor, Dave Bing, and many Detroit residents patrolling the streets of Detroit. The amazing part of Angels’ Night is that it’s working. Last year, there were only 93 fires reported compared to the 800 in 1984.

Emergency Ordinances

According to the Detroit Free Press, the officials are enforcing two emergency ordinances this week and the first one is the curfew.

Curfew: There is an emergency curfew for anyone who is under the age of 18. From 6pm tonight until 6 am tomorrow anyone who is 17 and under must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during those hours.

If curfew is violated the minor will ticketed and held until the parents or the child’s legal guardian picks up the child.

Fuel: The second emergency ordinance is that no one is allowed to dispense fuel into portable containers. The ordinance doesn’t end until Thursday at 11:59 pm and can be broken in emergency situations. Unfortunately the city has not identified what makes and emergency situation.
