How much do you trust your doctor?
Doctors are a part of a profession where people entrust their lives to them everyday. That is why it can be difficult to comprehend when one is convicted of abusing their power. Today, we are examining criminal sexual assault in the news.
Local Doctor Convicted of Criminal Sexual Assault
Kassem Hallak, a 54-year-old doctor from Holt, Michigan, is facing up to 15 years in prison after being convicted of criminal sexual assault last month. He was convicted of 8 counts of the 11 he was charged with. The charges ranged from groping to rape and almost all the charges took place at the Charlotte Medical Center and Urgent Care.
Reportedly, Hallak was found guilty on two counts with one female victim and was acquitted on three counts that involved other female patients.
His defense tried to prove that the witnesses had no creditability, even going as far to say that the witnesses were telling lies on the stand. The jury didn’t buy what the defense was selling and because of this, now the defendant is facing 15 years in prison.
Here is what CBS Detroit reported on the trial,
The youngest victim was 12 years old at the time. A 14-year-old girl told police Hallak, at the Eaton Rapids Medical Center in 2003, spanked and kneaded her buttocks. Another girl said Hallak was giving her a school sports physical when he grabbed her crotch. Another woman said Hallak pinned her legs to an exam table and sexually assaulted her as she sought treatment for back pain in 2010.”
Hallak’s medical license was suspended in December 2011. During the trial that lasted over three weeks, he testified that he was innocent and cited medical records to back up his defense. Unfortunately, according to the Lansing State Journal, the Eaton County Circuit Court jury found him guilty. He is now being sentenced to prison at the end of this month.
